光纤激光器是近年物理研究的一个热门，被认为是可能全面取代固体激光器。光纤激光器是指用掺稀土元素玻璃光纤作为增益介质的激光器，光纤激光器可在光纤放大器的基础上开发出来：在泵浦光的作用下光纤内极易形成高功率密度，造成激光工作物质的激光能级“粒子数反转”，当适当加入正反馈回路（构成谐振腔）便可形成激光振荡输出。光纤激光打标机是利用激光束在各种不同的物质（由于激光波长的关系，主要是金属，也有部分非金属）表面打上的标记。打标的效应是通过表层物质的蒸发露出深层物质，或者是通过光能导致表层物质的物理变化而"刻"出痕迹，或者是通过光能烧掉部分物质，显出所需刻蚀的图案、文字、条形码等各类图形。
